GPS Tracker With No Monthly Fee: What You Actually Pay For

Searching for a GPS tracker with no monthly fee or subscription is common, and it is a reasonable thing to want. Here is what the ongoing cost normally covers, and what to check before you buy a tracker that promises none.

The short answer

A live GPS tracker has to send its position to you, and that needs a mobile data connection. Someone has to pay for that connection and for the platform that turns raw positions into maps, journey history and alerts. So "no monthly fee" usually means the cost has been moved somewhere else rather than removed: into the upfront price, into a prepaid data allowance, or into limits on what the tracker can do.

What the ongoing cost normally covers

  • Connectivity. The SIM and data that carry each position report from the vehicle to the platform.
  • Platform access. The live map, route history, alerts, reports and user logins, hosted and kept running for you.
  • Support. Someone to help when a unit stops reporting or a vehicle changes.

What "no subscription" trackers usually are

  • Passive GPS loggers. They record where the vehicle has been but do not send it anywhere, so you must get the device back to read it. They cannot show a live location or help recover a stolen vehicle.
  • Bluetooth tags. These rely on other people's phones passing nearby. They are not live GPS trackers and are unreliable for vehicles.
  • Prepaid or limited-data trackers. A fixed data allowance or a long prepaid period is included. Check what happens when it ends.
  • "Lifetime" plans. Read the terms for what "lifetime" means: the life of the device, the company or the network technology it depends on.

Questions to ask before you buy one

  • Is the live map or app free for as long as I own the tracker, or only for a trial period?
  • What data is included, and what happens when it runs out?
  • How often does it report, and is that fixed or limited?
  • Which mobile networks can it use, and will it keep working as 2G and 3G are withdrawn? See our guide to the 2G and 3G switch-off.
  • What support is there if it stops working?

Buying outright, renting and the ongoing service

For business fleets the useful comparison is usually between buying the hardware and renting it. Buying means a one-off payment for the tracker, but connectivity, platform access, data and support continue under a service plan. Renting combines the equipment and the service into a recurring charge. Neither is automatically better, and our pages on buying trackers outright and tracker rental set out the differences.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a GPS tracker with no subscription at all?

Devices that record without transmitting, such as passive loggers, have no connection cost, but they cannot show a live location. A tracker that reports live needs mobile data, so the cost is normally either an ongoing plan or a prepaid allowance that is paid for upfront.

Can a GPS tracker work without a SIM card or internet?

A GPS receiver can work out its position without any connection, because it uses satellites. To send that position to you it needs a data connection, normally a SIM. Without one it can only store positions for you to collect later.

Is buying a tracker outright cheaper than renting?

It depends on how long you keep the vehicles and what the service plan costs. Buying usually means a higher initial cost and ownership of the hardware, while ongoing connectivity, platform and support charges still apply. Ask for both options in one written quotation to compare them over the period you care about.
