What makes up the price
- Hardware. The tracker itself, bought outright or supplied as part of a rental. Hardware for cars and vans is different from hardware for HGVs, trailers, plant or hazardous areas.
- Installation. Self-install keeps this low where the vehicle and device suit it. Hardwired installation is concealed and permanent, and is usually quoted separately.
- Connectivity. The data and SIM that carry each vehicle's position. Multi-network connectivity and European coverage can affect this.
- Platform and features. Live tracking, route history, alerts, reports, driver behaviour, multiple users and integrations.
- Fleet size. Larger fleets are normally priced per vehicle with volume taken into account.
- Contract length. The minimum term and what happens at renewal.
Buy or rent?
Buying usually means a higher initial cost and ownership of the hardware, with service charges continuing. Renting usually lowers the upfront cost and bundles hardware and service into a recurring charge. See buying trackers outright and tracker rental, or ask for both in one written quotation.
How to compare quotes fairly
- Ask for hardware, installation and ongoing service costs shown separately.
- Check the minimum term, the notice period and what happens if you sell or write off a vehicle.
- Find out who owns the hardware and what happens to it when the contract ends.
- Ask what is included in support, and whether reports and extra users cost more.
- Be wary of a very low monthly price that leaves out installation, data or features you need. See GPS trackers with no monthly fee.
Why Trackmatic quotes for your fleet
The right setup depends on how many vehicles you have, what they are, how they are fitted and what you need to see. Trackmatic quotes for each fleet, and the quotation shows hardware, installation and ongoing service costs separately. Our buying guide and fleet tracking buyers guide explain what to compare, and our pricing page explains how to get a price.
Frequently asked questions
How much does vehicle tracking cost per vehicle?
It varies with the hardware, the installation method, the connectivity and features you need, the size of the fleet and the contract length. Ask for a written quotation that separates hardware, installation and monthly service so you can compare like with like.
Are there hidden costs with vehicle tracking?
The usual ones to ask about are installation, data, extra users or reports, early-termination charges and what happens to the hardware at the end. A clear quotation should show all of these before you commit.
Is it cheaper to self-install a tracker?
Self-install can reduce installation time and cost where the vehicle and tracker suit it. It is not right for every vehicle, so check suitability before you decide.
